things aren't always as they seem

It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude. – Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance

#Trust30 prompt #3: The world is powered by passionate people, powerful ideas, and fearless action. What’s one strong belief you possess that isn’t shared by your closest friends or family? What inspires this belief, and what have you done to actively live it?

I am a vegetarian. It’s not so much of a belief as an action, because I gave up meat as a health choice. Are any of my closest family or friends vegetarian? No, they are not. Going out to eat takes a bit more work now. And I don’t want to hear that “such-and-such has place has salads, we can go there.” Salads, in this context, usually means some small pile of wilted iceberg lettuce with a couple of strips of carrots and maybe — maybe — a slice of cucumber.

Note to the world: I don’t like iceberg lettuce.
