I got lucky one day this last week when a morning meeting ended early. I exited the Annex building and started to cross the street when I came across a woman strolling on the sidewalk, playing a mandolin. (It can’t just be “walking” if you’re playing a mandolin; it has to be “strolling.”)
It’s 10:05 a.m., or thereabouts, on a weekday. I was intrigued. I walked right up to her and started strolling along. She was a state employee, on break. She already played guitar, she told me, and was teaching herself the mandolin. Her name was Marge. Marge with the mandolin, as I came to think of her. She’d played guitar for years and had moved to Austin about 5 years ago. Lots of live music in Austin (as everyone knows) and she was working up to be part of it. Marge played her mandolin while I asked her questions. Alas, in just a few minutes her break time (and my interview time) was over, so we both went back to work.
It was so nice to hear live music on a cool morning, in the midst of the state office complex. Proof positive that Austin is the Live Music Capitol of the World. Go Marge with the mandolin!
