Ground Hog Day

Ground Hog Day. The day when the officials that be yank Punxsutawney Phil out of his burrow to tell if the sun is shining or not. They want to know if winter will last 6 more weeks or if they will have an early spring.

Is there no other way to determine this?

They should consider letting Phil go shopping at a super grocery store (after he’s had his morning coffee, of course). Then, as he exists the store, they can check his basket. Is it full of microwavable comfort food? Soups, root vegetables, beef jerky and one of the Harry Potter books? If so, they can look forward to winter hanging around for a while.

If Phil’s basket has valentine candy, easter candy, cedar mulch, lilly bulbs, a new pair of gardening gloves and the latest issue of Oprah’s magazine, they’d be safe in jumping to the conclusion that spring will be early.

That takes care of that, wouldn’t you say?
